We were commissioned by Persimmon to join their existing design team as a ‘critical friend’ to help lift the vison of their proposals for 3,500 homes in South Wales on a former cast mine.
The previous masterplan for the site was characterised by segregated land use, big box retail and a wide ‘primary corridor’ running through the centre. Throughout the project we worked closely with the existing design team (EDP) carrying out a local character tour and internal design charettes to develop a vision for a mixed-use masterplan that was deliverable and would create more value, reflect local character, increase resident wellbeing and support more sustainable development.
Our vision was for Llanilid to become:
1. A real village. A place with a heart. A generous central village green. A pub. Homes. Shops. Places to meet and work.
2. A high street where you want to shop and work and spend time.
3. A place which could only be South Wales and which could not be anywhere.
4. A good place to live and grow up with forest schools, greenways and parks.
5. A place which is really walkable and where you can cycle to the nearest train stations.
