Active Travel England (ATE) have been created to ensure that 50% of trips in our towns and cities are walked, wheeled or cycled by 2030. They have said:
‘Like anyone with a big target to hit, we need to work with the willing and that means sharing our faith and the majority of our funding with councils that have the highest levels of leadership, ambition and ability to deliver.’
They have begun the process of inviting bids from local authorities for around £500m of grant funding to support both capital and revenue schemes nationwide, across a multi-year settlement period 2022/23 to 2024/25.
Our deputy director, David Milner, will be speaking at Walking and Cycling Innovations 2022 on 2 November at 9:30 am to examine how masterplanning can help achieve this goal, what the “hidden levers” are that make this harder to achieve and how to fix them.
